Goals. We all have them, but how many of us are really using them to our advantage? Setting goals for yourself is so much more than saying your going to do something. It’s making a commitment, being specific about your plan, and then putting it into action. But it doesn’t stop there.
The thing about setting goals is that they change as time goes on. That’s why it’s important to evaluate yourself and your progress over time. But it’s also important to make your goals measurable. For example, instead of saying “I want to get fit,” say, “I will exercise for one hour at least three times per week.” See the difference? By giving yourself a road map, you make it easier to achieve that goal because you’ve laid out what steps you’ll take to get there.#GoalSetting is so much more than just saying you're going to do something. To make this concept easier to understand, here’s a fun mnemonic device to help guide you in setting your goals.
I will establish a savings VS. I will put away $X.00 every X days/weeks/months in a college savings account. I will set up the account at XYZ Bank BEFORE X/X/20XX.
How will you know when you’ve reached your goal? What will you do once you’ve reached it? My advice: KEEP GOING!
Are your goals practical?
Have you taken any possible setbacks into account?
Have you given yourself a reasonable amount of time to accomplish these goals? (It’s always best to allow room for error.)SMART #Goals... do you have them? Click To Tweet
SMART Goals for 2016
How I’ll Improve My Life In School
When my mom passed away in September I immediately withdrew from the college courses I was taking part time. I knew she would have wanted me to continue, but I had no idea what my mental state would be or how much stress I would be under dealing with her estate and all the legal precedings. I didn’t want my grades to slip, so I did what I felt was best. It turns out that I probably would have been fine to finish out the courses, but I’m still glad that I didn’t. Instead, I started this blog, and it’s the best thing that’s happened to me this year. While I hope to eventually turn this into a full-time business, in the meantime I need to continue pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Business and Digital Media.
My goal for 2016:
- Earn at least a B in all courses. (For spring, summer and fall semesters.) Ideally I’d like to get all A’s, but I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment either. I’m going to be really busy, so if I give myself a little extra room I’ll be that much happier if I exceed my goal.
How I’ll Improve My Life At Home
2015 has taken the trophy for the biggest and most significant changes of my life to date. (And that’s saying a lot for someone whose had a child and moved across country twice.) In the past I never dealt with change well. However over the last few years, I’ve learned that although sometimes change brings sadness and hurt, there is also a lot of good that can come of it. I never thought I would own a house at 25, let alone a house as nice as the one I was fortunate enough to grow up in. I’m thankful every day that my daughter is in a good school district, has a roof over her head and a room all to herself, and two parents that love her. She probably thinks we gang up on her, but I know one day she’ll understand.
My goals for 2016:
- Have at least 1 Family fun night/day every week
- Eat 3 healthy meals/day (Zoey eats breakfast at daycare, so this is for me because I rarely eat breakfast.)
- Exercise at least 3 times per week for 1 hour each time
- Invest in a 529 college fund for Zoey
How I’ll Improve My Life Online
Last year I could only dream of blogging. On October 7th my site went live, and I shared the video I made as a tribute for my late mother. (More on that in a different post.) I’m part of a wonderful group of women called the #WAYWOW community hosted by Nikki at View From In Here. I’ve learned so much within the past three months of blogging. Seriously, more than I could have ever dreamed, and I can’t wait to see what the next year holds.
My goals for 2016:
- Post at least 2 times/week (If I wasn’t in school part-time and working full-time I would commit to more, but this is realistic.)
- Participate in WAYWOW Facebook group at least 3 tasks/week
- Have at least 1,000 page views/day by December 31, 2016
I’m still working on figuring out the best way to get to 1,000 page views/day. Whether that be more promotion via social media, linking up, sponsored posts, etc… I will be adding a few more goals to this list as a way to reach that last one.
Until next time,
